What is a Doula?

The word 'doula' comes from an Ancient Greek word meaning "a woman who serves," and is now used to describe a modern profession. A doula is trained and experienced in childbirth and helps to provide guidance, evidence-based information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth.

What Does A Doula Do?

  • Provides information and helps to sort through options regarding birth preferences.
  • Provides emotional and physical support.
  • Helps facilitate clear communication.
  • Uses comfort measures and techniques including touch, relaxation + movement during labor.
  • Provides support for the birth partner.

What a Doula Does NOT Do

  • Doulas are NOT medical professionals, they are not there to treat or diagnose any medical condition.
  • They do not perform any clinical or medical tasks.
  • They do not deliver your baby.
  • They do not take over the role of your husband or partner.
She really knows her stuff! Thanks to her, I was able to have the natural birth I wanted. I whole-heartedly recommend Cass!
